The grinding plate is almost certainly jammed. There's a reset socket on the bottom of the unit for a hex key — you can insert a ¼-inch Allen wrench and manually work the plate loose. If that doesn't free it, the jam is mechanical or the motor capacitor has failed. We'll diagnose and resolve it on the visit.
Household size and cooking habits drive the choice more than sink size. A ½ HP unit handles light use in a 1–2 person household. A ¾ HP unit covers most families with regular cooking.
