Why Rivs Home for Electrical Services

Code Compliance Is Not Optional

Connecticut follows the National Electrical Code with state-specific amendments, and permits are required for many residential electrical jobs. We know what requires a permit, what requires inspection, and how to document work so you don't end up with undisclosed open permits when you go to sell the house.

We Specialize in Residential — Not Commercial Retrofits

Residential electrical work has its own specific challenges: attic and crawl space runs, older wiring systems like aluminum branch circuit wire, and integrating modern loads like EV chargers and whole-home generators into panels that weren't designed for them. We do this every day.

We Don't Leave a Panel Worse Than We Found It

A panel that's been worked on by multiple contractors over the years accumulates problems — double-tapped breakers, mismatched wire gauges, missing knockouts, improperly labeled circuits. We clean up what we work in. If we open your panel, we fix what we see and leave it safer than it was.

Transparent Scope Before Anything Is Opened

We don't open walls or start running wire before you understand the scope and cost. If a job turns out to require more work than expected, you'll hear about it before we proceed — not see it on the invoice.

How It Works

1

Scope the Job

We assess the work location, check the existing circuit load and breaker capacity, and confirm whether the planned work requires a permit or inspection. For panel work, we photograph and label the existing configuration before doing anything.

2

Safe Execution

We de-energize circuits before working, verify with a non-contact tester before touching any wire, and follow proper grounding and neutral separation throughout. Connections are made with the right method for the wire type — aluminum gets anti-oxidant compound, copper gets listed connectors. No shortcuts.

3

Test, Label, and Verify

Every circuit we work on is tested under load before we close up. Breakers are labeled accurately on the panel directory. New outlets and fixtures are checked for polarity and ground continuity. We don't consider a job done until it's verified, not just energized.

Common Questions

Does adding an EV charger require a panel upgrade?

Not always. Most 200-amp panels can support a Level 2 charger if there is capacity and an open breaker space. Many 100-amp services need a load calculation first and may require an upgrade. We verify your panel before recommending anything.

My lights flicker when the HVAC kicks on. Is that a wiring problem?

It can be normal if the flicker is brief and affects only a few lights — HVAC compressors draw a large inrush current when starting. If the flicker is prolonged, widespread, or accompanied by dimming that doesn't recover quickly, that can indicate an undersized circuit, a loose connection at the panel, or a service entrance issue. We can diagnose which case applies to your home.

How do I know if my home has aluminum branch circuit wiring?

Homes built between roughly 1965 and 1973 commonly have aluminum wire on 15 and 20-amp branch circuits. Signs include outlets and switches that feel warm, outlets that show discoloration or char marks, or a home inspection report that flagged it. Aluminum wiring is still in service in many Connecticut homes and is safe when properly maintained and terminated with listed devices or properly pigtailed. We can inspect, assess, and remediate as needed.
