Downspouts that are crushed, separated at the elbows, or discharging too close to the foundation need attention before the next significant rain. We replace individual downspout sections or full runs and make sure the discharge direction and length actually moves water away from the house.
Tape is a temporary fix at best — it fails with the first freeze-thaw cycle. A proper reconnection uses a self-tapping screw through the overlap joint. If the elbow itself is crushed or cracked, we replace it. Correctly reconnected elbows stay put through the season.
A minimum of four to six feet is the commonly cited guideline, and further is better on properties with high water tables or clay soil that drains poorly. A buried drain or a longer roll-out extension can move water further if the discharge area is limited.
