A gutter system that holds water after rain, drains slowly, or directs water toward the house rather than away from it has an optimization problem — not necessarily a damage problem. We evaluate the system's pitch, outlet placement, and downspout sizing and correct what's causing poor drainage.
The standard is ¼ inch of drop per 10 feet of horizontal gutter run. On a long run — over 40 feet — it's better to pitch from the center toward an outlet at each end than to try to drain a single long run to one outlet. Flat gutters hold water and rust from the bottom up.
That usually means the outlets or downspouts are undersized for your roof's drainage area, or the downspouts are obstructed. A 3×4 downspout handles significantly more volume than a 2×3 — upgrading outlet drops and downspouts to the larger size often resolves overflow in heavy rain without any other changes.
